What are 'stray' scores?

A score is considered stray when the connection between an application and a reviewer is broken after the reviewer has already evaluated that application.

You can identify stray scores in the Manage workspace by going to Reviewing > Settings > Assignments and using the Method filter set to Stray in the advanced search.

Stray scores can occur when:

  • A reviewer is removed from a panel
  • An application is deleted
  • The reviewer role is removed from a user

An application may originally have been assigned through a panel or a manual assignment and then removed. Because Good Grants does not delete data, the scores remain in the system and are marked as stray. These scores are no longer included in the leaderboard or any exports.

If you wish to recover stray scores, you will need to recreate the original connection—for example:

  • Add the reviewer back to the panel
  • Recreate the manual assignment
  • Restore the reviewer role on the user

Good to know

  • Stray scores are preserved for audit and data integrity, but they do not count toward reviewing progress or leaderboard results.
  • Restoring the original assignment connection automatically re-links the scores.
  • If multiple changes were made, you may need to retrace several steps to fully restore the relationship between the reviewer and the application.
